My Baby Loc Maintenance

The maintenance of my locs that I started in November of 2014, has been easy breezy. I'm not constantly twisting or styling. Most of the time my hair is free. My locs were started from two strand twist that I did myself. It has been enjoyable to see the changes in the texture of my hair, and how the curls transform to uniformed loced strands. I wash my hair once a week with Dr. Bronners Peppermint Soap. I've only noticed a little build up in my scalp but the peppermint soap gets it out in 2 washes. When it's time to really clarify, I clean with Organic Apple Cider Vinegar diluted with water. It balances the ph of my hair so that water can keep it moist.

For moisture I apply Shea Moisture's Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-In Conditioner. I use this sparingly throughout my hair because I usually dampen my hair with water if it feels dry, which also speeds up the locing process. Locs love water, don't let anyone tell you different. When it comes to my roots, I do the latching process with my fingers instead of a tool, its better for me since I have an active lifestyle and would sweat out a gel set within minutes. Gel gives unecessary build up that would only cause problems in the future of my growth. Low manipulation, washing 1x a week, and applying water often, has kept me confident in the health of my hair.

Once in a while I do see a fly sista with a beautiful fro and I yearn to touch my loose strands again, but for the most part I am happy with my decision to loc since I've always been in love with loced hair. Plus this journey is also a spiritual one for me, teaching me patience and a deeper love for self. Peace.
